Gold Medal “Stanislao Cannizzaro” of the Italian Chemical Society
The Gold Medal “Stanislao Cannizzaro” of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI) is one of the most prestigious awards given from SCI and is conferred on Scientists who have made excellent contributions to the fundamental chemical knowledge and have distinguished themselves internationally for the originality of their research and activities in any field of Chemistry. The Medal is awarded every three years.

In 2017 the award is assigned to prof. Gabriele Centi for the "innovative contribution to the development of new solutions for efficient and sustainable use of resources and energy in chemical production, particularly in the introduction of renewable energy in the production cycle, developing new electrocatalytic methodologies for the conversion of CO2 and N2, opening new frontiers of research and laying the groundwork for the new direction of chemistry indicated as "Solar-driven Chemistry".

Bio-methanol from Refuse-derived-fuels (RdF) has an estimated cost of production of about 110 €/t for a new WtM 300 t/d plant. The WtM process allows to produce methanol with about 40% and 30–35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with respect to methanol production from fossil fuels and bio-resources, respectively.

The addition of a CO2 adsorption component (substituted imidazolate-based SIM-1 crystals) to a gas diffusion layer (GDL) type catalytic electrode allows to enhance the activity and especially the selectivity to >C1 carbon chain products (ethanol, acetone and isopropanol) of a Pt-based electrocatalyst that is not able to form products of CO2 reduction involving C-C bond formation under conventional (liquid-phase) conditions.
